Lace Wig Hairstyles: How to Select Hair Density & Volume

Lace Wig Hair Density and VolumeYour wig’s hair style is determined by hair density, color texture and cut. Hair density refers to how much hair is sewn on a wig cap to create thickness and fullness. To create a fuller density lace wig, more hair is used and more strands of hair are knotted in each hole. Lighter density lace wigs use less hair and less strands of hair are knotted in each hole.

Medium density is the average choice (100%-130%) and suitable for most women. It is the most popular density requested for lace wigs.  Lace wigs are typically made with a lighter density at the front hairline and gradually increases thickness throughout the rest of the wig. It is advised to have more hair than less because it can always be thinned out. Medium density hair also accommodates normal shedding from daily grooming. Wigs with density less than 80%  are not recommended because they need to be repaired more quickly.

The perception of density is determined by the type of hair used, texture and how it is styled. For example curly hair creates the illusion of volume and fullness. Curly, wavy and kinky textured hair expands when combed out. Very straight hair textures have less volume and fullness. Therefore, two wigs with the same exact hair density will have different looks in volume based on the hair style and texture. Hair spray, highlights and layered a hair cut also adds volume to hair.

Everythingwigs.com – What is a Full Cranial Prosthesis?

A full cranial prosthesis is a wig for people dealing with long periods of hair loss or has permanent hair loss due to a medical condition. The wigs are hair replacement units which offer a natural looking appearance and the feeling of wearing real hair. Medical conditions attributing to hair loss are chemotherapy treatments due to cancer, trichotillomania and alopecia.

A full cranial prosthesis not only conforms to the shape of your head. It also can be parted and styled in any manner desired, as with your real hair. The wig cap construction will accommodate the re-growth of your natural hair following the treatments and has a special non slip material for added security. Wig caps used for full cranial prosthesis can be either full lace or thin skin. If you have hair loss, it is recommended that you select a custom wig with your precise measurements for the best fit.

Some insurance companies reimburse for the purchase of medical cranial hair prosthesis. Many insurance companies will not cover the term “wigs”. It is important to use the correct wording (medical cranial hair prosthesis) in the prescription in order to get reimbursement. Contact your doctor to see if you hair loss condition warrants a prescription for a cranial prosthesis. Contact your insurance company for instructions on coverage and reimbursement of a full cranial prosthesis.

How to Select Hair Colors and Curl Patterns for Human Hair Wigs

Usually Indian (Chinese, Malaysian, etc.) hair colors are naturally between an off black and dark brown.  Lighter browns, reds and blondes must be processed to lighten to hair color.

The lighter the hair color, the looser the curl we recommend you to select. Blonde hair does not hold tighter curls and deep waves well.  Blonde hair processed for permanent curls have a slightly different feel than darker color hair. This is because the hair has been greatly processed to lighten the color and then requires extra processing for a permanent curl. The deeper the curl, the more processing is required. In essence the hair becomes over processed.  That is why it is best to use loose body waves for blonde hair if you do not choose natural straight.

If you see photos of curly blonde lace wigs, most likely the curls are not permanent. It is straight hair which has been curled with a curling iron. Once you wash your wig the curl is gone and you must retool the hair with a curling iron to achieve the original look.

Tip: If you like curly blonde hair, purchase a wig with a light body wave texture.  The wave is permanent and requires minimal processing. Once you apply the wig, use a curling iron or rollers to tighten the curl.  It is easier to curl a wig that has a light wave applied than one than a silky straight wig. This is because the body wave holds a curl better

Tip:  If you see a photo of a lace wig you would like to custom order, the texture and appearance of the wig you receive may slightly differ depending upon changes you request which are different than the photo. For example, let’s say you see a photo of a hairstyle that is the color #1B (off black) with a deep curl. You like the style but would like the same curl pattern except with a color #4 with #27 highlights. Because the hair color is lighter, the curl texture may be slightly different.

How to Measure Wig Hair Length

613_27 curlThe length of a wig is measured when the hair is straight. Curls and waves may appear 1-2 inches shorter depending upon the curl pattern. For example, if you would like a 16 inch curly wig, consider purchasing an 18 inch wig because, depending on the type of curl it may appear to look 14-15 inches.
